 Manual Transmission Hi Guys,
I'm having some trouble with my 72's shifting. I put a brand new column in and 2nd and 3rd are still difficult to shift into. 3rd more than 2nd. 1st and reverse are perfect. When shifting into third it feels like it's catching on something. I've tired adjusting the adjustment rod to no avail. I replaced the spring and grommets on the levers too.
Any thoughts on why I'm still having trouble?
I'm thinking there must be something wrong either with the clutch or transmission itself - or both. If I do need to change the transmission or clutch I'm thinking I'd like to change it to something that will enable me to cruse easily on the highway. What would you guys recommend? I want to keep the three on the tree.

Re: Manual Transmission If it was the clutch it'd be bad for all the gears. Do you know what it feels like when a syncro goes out?

Re: Manual Transmission It feels like what you are describing, like it's catching on the gears instead smoothly shifting. Have you ever shifted a manual without a clutch by matching the the engine RPM with the next shift? Try this, but use the clutch, and if it shifts easier then I'd say you may have a syncro problem.

Re: Manual Transmission Trel - yes I have replaced all the bushings between the pedal and trans and also on the column.
Thanks, Kinder. I have shifted like that - once - on a superbeetle I used to own when the clutch cable broke. Wasn't fun but go me home. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Are these transmissions difficult to rebuild? Would you advice putting a new clutch in too while the trans is out?

Re: Manual Transmission They're cheap enough you could just buy another used and not worry about it for another 10 years. And by cheap I mean most times you can find them free.
