Post Odd Sound Question
Hi Gang,

I was hoping you could help identify where this sound is coming from... it's not in my Bronco but rather my pickup truck -a 69' Dodge.

It's coming from under the truck and usually only happens when I take my foot off the clutch or gas pedal. As soon as I put my on the clutch pedal, it goes away. Oddly, it sometimes it happens when I hit the gas pedal too. Doesn't matter which gear I'm in. It does get louder when turning right.

The clutch is new (I've put maybe 3000 miles on it), the carb is rebuilt, new points, distributor, cap, rotor, spark plugs, alternator, voltage regulator, etc. Also just recently had green bearings put in the rear end with brand new brake drums, pads, hoses, master and wheel cylinder, etc on the brake system. Pretty much everything is new there....

Here's a video/audio clip: http://vid98.photobucket.com/albums/l27 ... ikf060.mp4

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Danny

When you replaced the clutch did you replace the throw out bearing?

Yes.

I should mention I checked the u-joints and they seem fine. No movement at all. BUT my driveshaft center bearing has some play. Could that be making the sound?

Thanks,
Danny

your center bearing should have no play at all.

Thanks, Mike. It has quite a bit of play so I'm thinking that's what it is. Does the sound like that to you?

I've never changed one before - can I do it without a hydraulic press?

Thanks,
Danny

Zoso, yes. That was my thought too at first. I guess it's possible the new one went bad... I sure hope not. Did it sound like the pilot bearing to you?

Thanks,
Danny

My car had a new pilot bearing failure that sounded very similar.
