Post Edelbrock Performer Intake
Hi guys. I've been looking at this intake manifold for a couple days now. I want to increase low end power through 2500 rpm.

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/mc/ ... -289.shtml

Thinking of hitting this in stages. Intake and 500 cfm carb first then Phase 2 install the Performer Plus cam. (Need assistance on roller or tappet.)

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/mc/ ... d-sb.shtml

Heads,,,,, later on. HEI?

Your thoughts would be appreciated ? Motor is 289 stock, 74000 miles, all original.

If your rig ever sees dirt you might consider a Quadrajet over the Edelbrock. Otherwise it's a great choice. I've got the 600 CFM Edelbrock and it's great, just bogs a little when it get rough. Also, if you think you're going to do heads I'd consider doing them at the same time as the cam since you'll have it torn apart. Cam will be for a flat tappet setup.

All of that said, given how stock your rig is I wouldn't touch a thing.

That's a great setup, I have the same exact intake, Carb, and headers.

Intake and Headers were bought used, Carb was bought new (rebuilt) and worked great right out of the box.

Cool - so at least I'm headed in the right direction. What headers did you use?

500 or 600 CFM?

Justin - thanks. Yep, I've kept all the parts so far that I've removed, except the original steering wheel. Damn that was stupid...... I'm actually planning on tearing into the original PTO winch in a couple days to see what's wrong with it. Should be a good ole messy time.

Before I started slapping any aftermarket stuff on, in the name of power gains, I would run a compression test in the motor. No sense in spending money on upgrades if the bottom end is on the way out. Not that 74k is a lot of miles, but you don't really know what kind of miles those may have been.

If your compression looks good across the board, then move forward on other fronts.

What gears are in the truck right now?

Thanks - I was looking at bronco hut shorties, but they are pricey! I just put new stock exhaust pipes on,, so it would be nice to find a set of headers that will bolt up.

Zach - yep that's a good idea. I will do that first and make sure the compression is good all around. Good time to check (replace) all the plugs too.

Post Re: Edelbrock Performer Intake
I ran a Edelbrock 500 cfm on my 68. On the street it was great, but off road it would flood out when climbing. I found a utube that showed a baffle installed between the float bowls. I gave up on it and installed a Holley 570 cfm.
Best carb I ever had was a Holley 500 cfm 2 barrel. Wore it out and stripped out the float bowl screws.

Totally agree. If I had a stocker it'd have a 2 barrel Motorcraft.
