Any interest in a big block Ford 460 build thread here?
I'll likely be starting my truck engine build this week and would post up my build here if anyone is interested? Nothing but it will be a full build without machine work. Engine was a strong running engine that was rebuilt sometime near 2009(bearings are stamped 3 of 2009) and not driven much after. It is already bored .030 over and still has cross hatching in the cylinders with no ridge whatsoever. The heads were in good shape and were rebuilt when the engine was and the seats and guides are in great shape. I've ordered the rebuild kit without pistons as these are in great shape. I'll be porting and polishing the heads myself, lapping and installing the new valves and valve springs myself along with seals of course. The valve springs are upgrades in order to accommodate a new, much more aggressive cam. I know a lot of people have expressed interest in engine building here so I'd be happy to post up a thread on my 460 documenting the entire build. Different engine but same principals and procedure, just bigger parts.

Did you consider MAF as an alternative? Just curious as Garry and I have discussed it for an F series, if/when I ever get a Bronco done.

Yes! Especially interested in the porting. Am considering gasket matching my intake.

Re: Any interest in a big block Ford 460 build thread here?
I read a write up a few years ago about a guy that swapped out the ecu for an AEM unit. Converted it to a MAF sefi from speed density/ batch fire. Said just by that conversion alone the 460 ran so much better. MPG went up 4-5mpg and power was greatly improved. I always wanted to efi the 460 in my 79 but the factory efi heads are junk.

330hp and 500+ is easy to get. The 460 in my 79 is 330hp 600tq. What are the specs on the cam you ordered? You really should look into milling the heads to bump the compression. a good spot would be 9.5:1

Re: Any interest in a big block Ford 460 build thread here?
The heads are already milled. Not sure how much but I'll CC them out once I get them polished and the new valves installed. I am guessing it will be around 9.2:1 compression. The cam is pretty mild in order to play nice with the speed density so it is only 212/219 duration @ .050 and .495 lift. Stock is just about 203/206 duration @ .050 lift and .405 lift. Should be a big improvement even though it is small.
I highly doubt anyone could get 4-5 mpg extra out of any decent running 460 with just a simple MAF swap. Especially with batch fire. I've pulled a best fuel mileage out of my truck of 14 mpg empty cruising to and from Ft. Collins. To see 18-19 would be insane with this engine.
The real 460 build will be my uncles. We will be building a 522 stroker with Jon Kaase heads. His will be closer to 650 hp and 700 lb. ft. He went with a milder cam than I would have but it'll also be a truck he may use to tow with eventually. It is a 1962 Ford F-250. We will also be converting to 4wd and putting in a 5 speed.
