Post Ring and Pinion set up
Hello All,

I am moving closer to regearing the 9". I have never done it before. I have been reading about it, and probably have watched every video on You Tube. I think I have a good grasp of it. I guess I am reaching out for help, at least a trained eye to check my work, read the pattern, and make needed adjustments. Would any of you be willing to help me out on this project? I can supply lots of beer, or cash. I want to do this job myself and save a bunch of money. I called a shop in the Springs today, asked them what they would charge me if I delivered my bare third member housing and bought all the parts from them. They want $879 for the job. That sounds flipping nuts! So what do you say? Or even a third member rebuild party if there was some interest? I am probably a couple weeks out from getting started, and still need to order my parts.

Thank You

I have a friend that set mine up and he charged $50.00
Now on the D44 installation I called around and the cheapest I found was $750 up to $ 1000. I thought it was highway robbery. I do know that it is much easier to set up a 9" than it is a D44.

Definitely do the 9" yourself. It's a great learning experience and easier since you can put the 3rd member on a bench. Dana 44 isn't tough just a pain in the butt on the bronco.

Dana44 shouldn't be more than $300 - $400 if you supply all the parts.

I just paid $390 for a new (to me) big bearing 9" third member, pinion support, yoke, open carrier and gear setup. I supplied the gears and new bearings and it's ready to be dropped in.

That's what I thought but I have all the parts that will be needed to install it. But I have called 5 or 6 shops and they are out ragiously priced. Going to end up taking it to a club member that said he would help set them and teach me in the process.[/quote]

And this is just one more example of why this club is so awesome!

So maybe two of us need help on RP set up, perhaps there are others, and we could come together on a RP party?

Don't think I would be a good host, I do not have a press. But from what I have learned, a press is not really required, just makes the job easier.

I'd be willing to host. I also currently have about 25 gallons of beer.

Now we are getting somewhere, 25 gallons of beer! I will bring more beer, pizza, sandwiches, and certainly some cash. All I want is one of you R&P experts to inspect my work and adjust if necessary. Show me the way of the gear....

Curious what it'd take to convert a 9" Detroit locker over to to an air locker? My bronco is already setup for ARB in the front, I'd like to have the selectable locker in the rear as well. Probably something to do on another day but thought I'd ask.

Ok, how about 100 bucks to the first experienced ring and pinion person that offers to check my work and pattern, and make any required adjustment to get the proper pattern? My axle is out, third member is torn down. I will be ordering gears this week. I will bring to you, fully assembled third, for your inspection. 100 bucks, and a 12 pack of your favorite beer.

No $ needed, if you bring it by as described it'll be a easy check. Also bring the install kit & pinion shims just in case.

Dukie- swapping the diff is just essentially setting it up from the beginning, very doable. Watch the routing of the air line to keep it safe.

Mr. Kinder,

I have my gears and rebuild kit, should have my Yukon Grizzly locker early next week. Next week I am dropping off my axle housing and third housing at powder coat. I hope to have an assembled third member late next week at the earliest. Going with the solid spacer and shims on the pinion bearings, rather than the crush sleeve.

Thank you, and I will be in touch.

Brent

Pressed on carrier and pinion bearings today. Still waiting on the powder coat of third housing, pinion, and yoke. It is coming soon, the build!

Now waiting on an inch pound torque wrench to check my pinion bearing preload. Believe I have my pinion depth correct per the pinion markings, 1.023". Once I get my inch pound wrench, I will get this thing finished up, and run a pattern.

I have all my tools now, pretty exciting night. Bearing preload on the pinion is 15 inch pounds, mounted the carrier, and set some carrier bearing preload. Pinion depth is a measured 1.023 and marked as such on the pinion per MFG. I set backlash to just over .007, MFG calls for .007 to .009. Ran my first ever pattern. I am unsure of the result. But from what I have seen on-line! it looks pretty close to good, maybe?

That looks really good. Not crossing the bottom, top or side edges. Nicely square in the middle. That should be quiet and give good service life.

That does look good, I always try to get the squinty eyeball shape right in the middle of the ring gear. Do you have the gear setup guide or book?

No, I only have You Tube, and the instructions that came with the gear set. So you think I am good to go? If you have the time, I can bring it by on Saturday....?
