Trying to pull the 302 out of the 75 today t replace with the Windsor. I have NEVER done this before. Everything is disconnected I THNK except the bell housing bolts. How may are there? Any other tips to not die or F up the Bronco doing this alone? Thanks guys- hope the swap meet was great!

If I remember correctly, there are 6 bolts that actually hold the bell housing to the engine then two that are lower down that hold the plate to the bell housing.

Only advise is go slow and take your time. If you have a load leveler it is much easier than just bolting a chain to the block.

Found last one. Everything is set up but the motor won’t budge.

This motor will not budge. I don’t know what I’m missing. Everything is disconnected but when I put pressure on the motor with a floor jack or hoist the whole front of the Bronco comes up. Anybody near elizabeth could come have a quick look? I know I’m out here.

You did pull the engine mounts right? Wondering if they are getting hung up. Also make sure you have something to support the bell housing.

X2 ,ive used a ratchet strap around the frame rails and hooked to itself to hold the front of the transmission up. Floor jack works too.

The torq converter will be bolted with 5-5/8”bolts I think, and you can get to them from the engine side of the fly wheel. Using a ratchet wrench makes it a little easier since there isn’t much room. Good luck!

Confused hereguys. Doesn’t look like the 351 has room for the harmonic balancer? Do I need to pull the timing chain cover off the 302 and use it?

Yes, the same torque converter can be used for both engines, you’ll need to confirm the 351 has the same flex plate as the 302. If it’s different swap it out as well. The 351 harmonic balancer is likely the truck version and has a different depth and bolt configuration, swap the 302 balancer & the rest of the accessory pulleys over as well. You’ll likely need to add the 351 accessory adapters to make the mounts line up. A quick google for the accessory adapters will show you a pic of what I’m taking about. All of this swapping can happen because the 351 and 302 have the same engine imbalance of 28oz.

Edit. The top pic w/ the blue engine still has the harmonic balancer on the engine. The timing covers are the same or nearly so, they shouldn’t need to be swapped. Pull everything off the front of the crank until only the crank snout shows with the key way then proceed to swap parts.

Now this- power steering pump bracket is too far to the right?

And the alternator bracket isn’t lining up with the holes in the block either.

The 351 is slightly wider (at the top) than the 289/302 blocks so different accessory brackets or adapters will be needed which is what kinder was mentioning.

Missed that- swapped out the balancer. So how does one remove a torque converter?

If you left the torque converter attached to the engine while removing it, that probably explains why you had such a difficult time.

Normal practice is to detach the torque converter from the flex plate and leave it engaged in the transmission by elevating the front of the trans up so gravity keeps it in the pump.

You may have damaged the pump seal if you left the torque converter on the engine during removal.

Shaft. Never done this before- how does one tell if I damaged it? Whats the replacement protocol?

How do you access the studs? I can’t see them?

I think you see / feel the seal to see if it is damaged.

The seal is probably less likely to get damaged because the stator support would have kept the converter snout straight when it was being pulled out. But if the converter snout is worn and rough it could have damaged the seal. If in doubt change it. I'd really be more worried about breaking the stator support off or bending the input shaft when pulling the engine with the converter.

Ok what am I missing? These brackets don’t line up with the adapter for the alternator. I figured out the power steering relocation but the alternator not so much.
