Post Re: Black Smoke Donkey
I’ve had mine in for a couple of years. One of the guys on our trip that races down there and runs a steering shop said it’s a “common” failure and knew exactly where the leak was when I was getting oil coming through the solenoid.

I too would be interested to find out what they say about the upgrade.

The part we made for the ARB RD99 locker was an engagement collar. We stopped making it as ARB upgrade the collar to a stronger version. I am not aware of an upgrade seal kit but wish you luck in your search.

This situation is very common it can be caused by interference from the adjuster lock. The lock often needs to be machined so that the air supply collar fits freely. Most of the time it's the alignment not the seals. I believe ARB provided an action update for this.

A little solar power for the Bronco camper. We struggled this fall when hunting to keep the lights on so it was time for an upgrade.

A good solar setup goes a long ways. Dad has 2 145watt panels on his camper. A good charge controller and we dont ever need to run the generator.

The solar is up and running, but I need to sort out the battery storage options. I’ve got a old 100ah AGM in at the moment but it’s too old to keep up with the loads I’d like to run. I can afford to buy a new AGM(s) to get to 200ah or save up some money and go Lithium. The newer battery tech is nice, but the price point hurts.

Go 2 6volt golf cart batteries. The capacity is insane with them.

they are smaller in width but taller than say a 27series battery. Would be worth while to figure out how to make room for them.

Dad also has one of these. It monitors how many amps are being pulled or charged. Also measures amphours. It's a very good way of keeping track of the batteries. He has the TM-2030-A

Well... this is going to slow down my upgrade. The passenger tube is bent, about 15mm or 1/2 inch towards the topside of the axle. It did come out of a farm truck, but I’d like to know what they were doing to bend a D60 tube. Maybe the kids went for a joy ride and jumped it.

Anyway, any recommendations for a shop that could try to straighten it before I go the replacement route, maybe Crawlertech?

Thanks for update. Crawltech would have been my suggestion so it's sad to hear they are closed but good to hear he is still in the business!

I would have also never thought to check straightness on D60 crazy , I've seen some work that the Flopshop has done on a truck in the neighborhood and looks great, also sorry to hear about Crawlertech so has Josh teamed up with the Flopshop?

Talked with Jon at The Flop Shop today, I’m going to try and drop the axle off this week. I’m glad to hear the positive words about the shop. Josh said he is leaving Colorado, so I think he’s just doing work at The Flop Shop until he leaves

That's bad, but fixable.

My old boss and I straighten out a JK rear HD44 in Moab after some enthusiastic product testing (think Dukes of Hazard). It was bent bad, but we straighten basically perfect with a bottle jack and transport chain. After double-checking it on the alignment machine at work, the axle is still running 6 years later.

You can bend or unbend one side more than the other by moving the jack around. The JK axle wasn't bent symmetrically and after getting it close, we had to move the jack to affect the passenger side more than drivers.

I actually thought about trying to straighten it myself. I was thinking an nice I-beam, my 20 ton hydraulic bottle jack, a nice 3/8 chain, my torch and maybe a small jig. But I have a promise to keep with the Camaro coming into the garage this week for a new clutch and the suspension work.

Fair enough.

FYI - It is very easy to bend an axle housing with a 20 ton jack. We nulled out a toe-in problem on a Toyota rear axle last year using the same method.

Will do, I have a rough over the phone price now, but I hope to hear from Jon early next week after he’s had a chance to straighten it out.

I talked with him for a few, they have some cool builds happening at the shop. He really liked BSD, which was nice, it doesn’t make everyone happy, per the social media haters, ha!

Housing is toast. I know it’s a long shot but if anyone has a lead on a 1978-1979 D60 housing or complete axle let me know.

Does it need to be a 78-9? Car-part.com is showing a 1991 in Grand Junction. Pumpkin is offset more to the DS, so the shaft lengths are different.
